The Al-Marjan Power Plant (also known as the Al-Marjan Independent Power Project or Rabigh 2 Power Plant) is one of the most prominent power generation projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The plant is located in the city of Rabigh on the western coast of Saudi Arabia, 130 km north of Jeddah. This project marks a milestone in the Saudi electricity sector, as it is the first independent power project to utilize combined-cycle technology, achieving a high overall thermal efficiency of 58.8%.

Massive Production Capacity: The plant has a total capacity of 2,060 MW, making it a key contributor to meeting the Kingdom's growing energy demand. Combined Cycle Technology: This project marks a significant milestone, as it is the Kingdom's first independent power project of this scale to utilize combined-cycle technology. Exceptional Thermal Efficiency: The plant boasts an overall thermal efficiency of 58.8%—a very high figure compared to plants operating under similar climatic and environmental conditions—resulting in lower fuel consumption for the same electricity output. Supporting the national electricity grid: The plant supplies the Saudi Electricity Company with electric power directly and reliably under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), thereby enhancing grid reliability in the Western Region and across the Kingdom. Reliance on natural gas as the primary fuel: The plant operates using natural gas for its steam boilers, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and decreased reliance on liquid fuels—aligning with the Kingdom’s environmental and economic objectives.
